International Swim & Save Program

Drowning is a leading cause of death and a serious public health problem worldwide. According to the International Life Saving Federation, about 1,200,000 people drown each year (i.e., 1 person every 30 seconds). According to the World Health Organization, several initiatives should take place at national and international level to prevent drowning and aquatic related injuries. One such initiative is Leucothea, an online International Swim & Save Program, created to raise swimming, water safety and drowning prevention awareness at no cost for everyone who has access to the internet.

The Origin of the Program’s Name

Originally a mortal named Ino, Leucothea was transformed into a sea goddess and famously saved the hero Odysseus by giving him her magic veil. Known as the "White Goddess," she is the most direct figure associated with rescuing the drowning. Like Leucothea saved Odysseus, this program teaches people to save themselves and others.
